After a letter got written May 23 to the AJ saying that bicycles ought to be banned from highways and farm roads, there was a good response in protest. Here's the link: http://lubbockonline.com/letters/2010-05-23/letters-editor#comment-104230

Here's was my contribution:

The first automobiles appeared to run on roads that had been improved for use by bicycle traffic. Bicycles were first on the roads.

It is no coincidence that the Wright brothers happened to be bicycle builders and mechanics. That was near the cutting edge of transportation technology at the time.

Cyclists are rarely impaired when they ride, except sometimes by fatigue. Motorists are quite often impaired or distracted as they drive: drugs, alcohol, cell phone use, age, talking to passengers, fiddling with the radio, fiddling with the GPS, doing makeup, even reading a map or the newspaper.

Those cyclists riding out in the county are typically experienced and fit, and unlikely to do something stupid. The same can not be said of motorists.
