With the approach of Jack's tournament, the Memorial at Muirfield, a course designed by Nicklaus and in Nicklaus' native state of Ohio, it is again time to reflect on Nicklaus' record of 18 "major" tournament wins and whether Tiger Woods will break that record. The Avalanche Journal carries a piece about that at http://lubbockonline.com/pro-sports/2010-06-02/woods-march-toward-majors-record-no-longer-sure-thing?v=1275438684.

What does this all mean? More sports hyperbole and media exaggeration? I am a bit unsure that "majors" are always major, and that the quality of competition and course and level of play in "the majors" is anywhere near head and shoulders above most of the other tournaments.

However, to play the game, I will express an opinion. Doug Ferguson who wrote the piece at the above link cites Nicklaus' belief that pro golfers peak in their mid-30s. Obviously if that is true of Woods, then he has the record in the bag if he gets his head together. But Woods may have already peaked. The distractions of life plus physical impairments may do him in.

IMO, maybe. Very Happy
