Her name was Virginia Van Wie. Golf writer Bernard Darwin said that she had the most beautiful swing he ever saw. She was the female analogue to Bobby Jones.

40 years after she played in Great Britain in the Curtis Cup matches, Brits who had seen her play still asked about "the girl with the glorious swing." [The Encyclopedia of Golf, Viking, 1973.]

She in the meantime had disappeared from the public eye, having retired from competition before the age of 25. Years later she resurfaced somewhat, as a teacher of golf in the Chicago area.

Virginia Van Wie died at the age of 88 in 1997. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1997-02-22/news/9702220101_1_golf-instructor-indoor-facility-women-s-amateur
